Interview with Tom Johnstone

 

What was your position title when working on GTA IV? 
Senior Graphics Programmer.

What did your role involve? 
Implementing and optimising PS3 specific engine and graphics features.

How long were you on this project?
1 year.

How have your studies at AIE assisted preparing you for working in the games industry? 
The AIE not only provided me with the fundamentals to program video games but also the industry ties to give me a foot in the door, which landed my first job.

What advice would you give aspiring games programmers? 
Show that you initiative as well as ability. Don't forget that employers are looking for someone with a great attitude.

What first interested you about games programming? 
Although I'm a very logical person as a programmer, I love the level of creativity working the games industry has afforded me. I've also been lucky enough to travel the world, working in the UK and the USA.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? 
Being involved with Grand Theft Auto and being in Scotland for the launch party.
