AIE Presents – Dave O’Conner on creative AI in Game Development

24 Apr 2007

AIE is proud to present renowned artificial intelligence (AI) programmer and President of Panther Games, Dave O’Conner, who will be presenting a short information and QA session on creative AI for Game Development.

Creative AI is a major component of successful games. AI makes games challenging and addictive, and thus generates a large portion of the game play value. AI is a deeply evolved science with more than 50 years of history. Throughout the evening, Dave will cover topics such as:

  • The case for Generic AI
  • How do we create smart entities?
  • Modelling a realistic Decision Making Process
  • How do we create smart organisations? – ie. modelling command structures and subordination.
  • Situational Awareness
  • The Building Blocks functions – ie. route finding, line of sight checks and threat analysis
  • Spiral Plan Development

Dave O'Connor has been designing wargames since 1985, with his design credits including "Trial of Strength", "Fire-Brigade", "Airborne Assault: Highway to the Reich" and "Airborne Assault: Conquest of the Agean". President of Panther Games, Dave is responsible for AI programming, game design, documentation and all the "business stuff" (for which the other members of the team are eternally grateful)! Panther Games is a successful Australian game studio, focusing on wargame development and are currently developing the next installment in the Airborne Assault series, Battles from the Bulge.
