The Academy of Interactive Entertainment [AIE] has joined with the Dream and Achieve Foundation to offer two South Coast young people $3000 scholarships to train for careers in the Computer Games and 3D Animation industries. One scholarship will be reserved for a female applicant who aims to work in the Games industry.
Announcing the scholarships at the Dream and Achieve gala dinner in Batehaven last Saturday the Academy’s CEO Ian Gibson said ‘There is a great deal of artistic and programming talent in the South Coast area and we are delighted to be part of encouraging it into Games, Film and other new creative industries.’
AIE graduates work in games and production houses throughout Australia and across the globe. Film and Game titles that graduates have been involved with include: Lord of the Rings, the Matrix Trilogy, Happy Feet, The Getaway, Ghost Ship, Medieaval:Total War II, Destroy All Humans I & II, Heroes of the Pacific and TV shows like David Tench Tonight. Increasingly, 3D art skills are also in demand in the defence, simulation, engineering and design areas. AIE animation students also recently achieved the top 16 of the 2007 Sony Tropfest Short Film Festival.
According to Gibson there is still a lack of knowledge about the Games industry and he adds ‘AIE is keen to form meaningful ties with South Coast schools and individuals who want to know more about careers in these areas.’
The Foundation already supports one south coast student at AIE. James Canty, a talented artist began training in a joint AIE/Canberra Institute of Technology 3D art course in February and plans to wait till the end of the year before choosing either a Games, Film or general 3D art pathway for his second year of study.
