Sony Scholarship winners announced!

19 Dec 06

Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) and Sony Foundation Australia have again joined together to offer the Sony Foundation Australia “Interactive Technology Scholarship”. In its sixth year, the scholarship provides financial support to talented AIE students to continue their studies in the Diploma of Computer Game Development at AIE’s Canberra or Melbourne campus. At the recent Games Connect:Asia Pacific (GCAP) conference in Queensland, this years winners were announced.

Congratulations to Simon Cottee (Canberra) and Christopher Michaelidis (Melbourne), who have been selected as this years scholarship winners. Simon and Christopher join a list of previous winners who have all been very successful in their chosen careers, such as Georgia Patten (2005) who now works with leading game developer, Big Ant Studios and Jessica Brett (2005), now with game developers Red Tribe Studios. Nicholas Rooke, European Account Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was on hand to present the scholarship in front of a large crowd at the inaugural GCAP conference.

“We would like to thank the Sony Foundation Australia for their ongoing support in offering this scholarship, and we look forward to running this program again in 2007” said AIE Head of School, Mr Neil Boyd. “We would also like to acknowledge the support from some of Australia’s leading games developers, such as Micro Forté, Irrational Games and IR Gurus, for their assistance in selecting the winners” said Mr Boyd.

Deciding this year’s scholarship was extremely difficult, with over 30 first year students applying for the prestigious award. Throughout the application process, students were subjected to a rigorous selection process involving submitting a portfolio of their work and being interviewed by industry representatives. It was a nervous wait for all the finalists until the recent GCAP conference, where the winners were announced.
