AIE Melbourne heralds in a New Era

22 Aug 06

The Academy of Interactive Entertainment today announced that Matt Curtis has been appointed as the new Acting Head of School for the Melbourne Campus.

Matt will continue to build on AIE Melbourne’s strengths in providing Games, 3D animation and digital content focused training, graduating students with the relevant industry-based skills, knowledge and experience. Matt begins his new role in October.

Matt stated “I look forward to leading AIE Melbourne into its next stage of development and growth, as AIE Melbourne continues to cement its reputation and success in training industry-ready Games Development and Digital Content professionals.”

Matt Curtis joined AIE Melbourne in 2004 as Head of the Programming Department after a successful career as a professional software developer in the games industry. Matt started programming in 1991, working in the electronic design industry focusing on embedded systems. He was employed by Atari Melbourne House, working for 7 years as a programmer and system developer.

Departing Head of School, David Giles has accepted a new position as Director of Development at Tantalus, however he will continue his close relationship with AIE as an advisor and an industry supporter.  David will be joining Dr Barry Roantree, former Dean of Design at Canberra Institute of Technology and other industry veterans on the AIE advisory committee, ensuring that AIE’s curriculum is relevant to the needs of the Games and related 3D industries.

David said, “It is with much reluctance that I move on from the AIE Melbourne campus. In the last three years I have seen the campus grow from an idea on paper to being regarded by many as the best vocational training institute for games development.  I have no doubt that under the direction of Matt Curtis, AIE Melbourne will reach even greater heights.  I will continue to be involved with the AIE as an adviser and friend and know it will become even more of a powerhouse with Matt at the helm.”

AIE Melbourne continues to grow in size and has continued success in developing industry ready graduates, with over 80% of 2005 graduates now employed fulltime in the 3D, Digital Content and Games Industries. In 2006, 40% of our 2nd year Art and Programming students are currently working part time in games studios while completing their studies.
