Detachment Film Entry for NCFF

15-Sep-2011 Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media students in AIE Canberra recently finished a short film entitled ‘Detachment’. The production of ‘Detachment’ began March 2nd with the film reaching completion on August 26th. This amazing feat was achieved by a group of only 8 Students.

‘Detachment’ was a great chance for students to experience working in an industry environment. The Screen and Media students created the story, character design and animation while students from the Canberra Institute of Technology crafted the soundtrack to the film.

“The students work in a simulated workplace environment where they have to develop the production schedules and the pipeline that allow them to work most productively. The effort was worth it because we finished the project and it’s worthwhile experiencing how much work actually goes into making even a short 7 minute film.” Tom Magill – Canberra Screen Teacher

One of the final scenes of the film tested AIE’s industry standard, higher end computers, with the tree and grass alone taking 7 hours and 50 minutes to render per frame. Once rendered, the scene still required several hours compositing to achieve the finished result. To accomplish their vision students used industry standard software including Maya, Nuke and Adobe CS5.

The story for the film came from Dylan Young; a student from the class and was designed to highlight cinematography and narrative techniques.
