As Bilbo Baggins continues on his quest to help the dwarves in Middle Earth, two AIE graduates have been on their own quest, working at WETA Digital on the latest instalment of The Hobbit; The Desolation of Smaug.

Ibrahim Magdy and Alex Hewitt both graduated from The Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media, Specialising in 3D Animation from AIE in 2012. After short contracts working at Animal Logic here in Australia, they were both hired by Peter Jackson’s world leading visual effects company, Weta Digital. Ibrahim was hired in the matchmoving department as a Tools Developer, while Alex hired as a Lighting Technical Director. While the film has been a raging success at the box office, it is now also in line to win a number of awards including; Best Visual Effects at the Oscars and recently picked up an award at the Australian Effects Animation Festival for winning the “Feature Film VFX” category.

We touched base with both Alex and Ibrahim just before the movies release to find out about their experiences over at Weta Digital. Alex was very quick to point out how much the skills he learnt at AIE had helped him land the job. He also highlighted how much you learn on the job. “Surrounded by incredibly skilled people who all have an amazing set of skills, I have learnt more than you could ever imagine working at Weta”

The fifth film in the series sees new locations, new characters and of course, Smaug. This massive dragon is two times the size of a 747 jet and certainly is a CG masterpiece. Smaug was brought to life by a large number of animators and artists who used keyframe animation techniques.
